Hopelessly Heather

The ramblings and obsessions of a longtime Avon lady

Thick hair usually doesn’t accommodate high ponytails easily.  The weight of the hair pulling on the scalp creates headaches and hair ties slip as the day goes on – leaving us looking worn out and cranky.  If you are a lover of high ponytails (like me), I’ll let you in on my secret weapon to achieving the look I want without having to suffer from the negative side effects: DOUBLE (or triple) up on your elastics!

My weapon of choice is Scünci Thick Hair No-damage Black Elastics and I use two at a time.  You’d think one should do the trick based on the fact that it’s specifically for thick hair, but I found they still slipped and caused headaches, so I doubled them up hoping it would alleviate the weight of my hair pulling on my scalp – and it works!  Specifically, I layer them by adding one elastic at a time (generally, one elastic can be tightly twisted around my ponytail base three times).  For those with even thicker hair than me, I express my condolences and would suggest adding even more elastics until you find that your ponytail doesn’t slip during the day.

Do you have thick hair?  If so, what are your solutions for wearing your hair up without (1) the style slipping under the weight ; and, (2) causing a headache?  Share your tips and tricks in the comments below!

Hey Lady – I’m gonna have to differ with you here. High ponytails can indeed be done with thick hair. It depends on the texture of the hair, black girls with thick hair, like my natural hair (without the hair extensions), can rock the highest, tightest ponytails beautifully all day long. We have that kinky texture to our hair that makes it effortless.🙂 And might I add, zero headaches too.

Oh, I wear high ponies more days than not and I have super thick hair, but have found I can only effectively do it by using multiple elastics. You do have a point re: texture though. If we were to weigh our hair, mine very well could be 2-3 times as heavy as yours, but your texture adds volume and it’s coarser.

  2. Sadly I don’t have thick hair and avoid ponytails because they never stay put due to my thin hair, aggravating. Now I’m not saying I have very little hair, I have plenty it’s just not thick like I’d like it to be. BTW, how is your new job going?

You have fine hair, not thin hair. 🙂 my mom has the same issue.

Day 4 is in the books and it’s been a chaotic week, to say the least! I’ll completely find my feet eventually, but I’m certainly not up to speed yet. Thank you for asking! 💕
